How to Negotiate Your Developer Salary
Most developers leave money on the table by not negotiating. Here's a calm, practical approach to get paid what you're worth.
Research market rates before any conversation
Use Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, LinkedIn Salary, and local developer community groups to establish a realistic target range for your location and level.
Never give a number first if you can avoid it
When asked for salary expectations, try 'I'm focused on finding the right fit — what's the budgeted range for this role?' This anchors the conversation on their number.
Negotiate the full package, not just base salary
Equity, remote work, signing bonus, learning budget, PTO, and health benefits all have monetary value. Sometimes these are easier to move than base pay.
Counter with a specific number, not a range
Giving a range means they'll offer the bottom. Counter with a specific number 10–15% above what you'd accept, with a brief justification.
Ask for time to consider any offer
You're always entitled to 24–48 hours to review an offer. Use this time to evaluate the full package, not just the salary headline.
