Software Engineer Salaries in Bangladesh: What the Data Actually Says
Two respected salary sources put the median Bangladeshi software engineer three times apart. The gap between them is the most useful thing in the data — here is what it means for what you should be paid.
Start with the gap between the two big sources
PayScale, drawing on 132 Bangladeshi profiles as of January 2026, puts the average software engineer at about BDT 353,700 a year — roughly BDT 29,500 a month. Levels.fyi, drawing on around 90, puts the median total compensation at BDT 1,041,000. That is not a rounding difference; one is three times the other. Neither is wrong. They are sampling different populations: PayScale captures the broad local market, while Levels.fyi skews heavily towards multinationals and international employers, who pay on a different scale entirely. Before you compare yourself to any number, work out which of those two markets you are actually in.
What the ranges look like by level
On Levels.fyi, entry-level engineers in Bangladesh fall between roughly BDT 389,000 and BDT 992,000. Mid-level engineers in Dhaka sit between about BDT 600,000 and BDT 1,738,000. Senior engineers run from around BDT 1,802,000 to BDT 2,784,000. Across the whole Levels.fyi sample the 25th percentile is about BDT 598,000 and the 90th about BDT 2,160,000. PayScale's senior figure is far lower at roughly BDT 929,000 — again, the same level, a different half of the market. Treat these as ranges to locate yourself within, not targets: sample sizes in the low hundreds mean the edges are thin.
Working for someone abroad changes the number more than seniority does
This is the single largest lever in the data. Arc puts the average expectation for a remote software developer in Bangladesh at about USD 41,465 for 2026 — several times the local PayScale average at the same experience level. The reason is simply which budget you are paid from. Moving from a local salary band to an international one is usually a bigger jump than a promotion, and it is available earlier in a career than most people assume.
Freelance and contract rates work differently again
Freelance developers across South and Southeast Asia typically bill in the USD 15–35 an hour range, and industry rate surveys put senior freelancers at roughly two to three times junior rates in every region measured. A developer billing at US or EU rates rather than local ones can earn several times the local equivalent for the same work. The trade is real, though: freelance income is unstable, unpaid time is your own, and you carry the cost of finding the next client.
What actually moves your number
In order of how much they change the figure: who pays you (local firm, multinational, or an overseas client), then seniority, then stack. Specialisations that consistently attract a premium across the surveys are cloud and DevOps, data and machine learning, and mobile. Years of experience matter least of the four — an engineer with three years at an international employer routinely out-earns one with seven at a local agency.

Then decide which market your next role sits in, because that determines which figure is your reference point.
